What are some good websites?
Sweet Coconuts Blog – Thousands of phrases, definitions, and audio posts. Wonderful resource to go beyond the the basic dictionary are build out your knowledge of Creole.
How To Creole – This is a free website and YouTube channel that offers a lesson based approach to learning Creole. It’s a great place to start for beginners, but also has some great advanced material too.
University of Kansas – They offer free printable dictionaries, readers, and articles to help students learn about Haiti.
Learn Creole with Gloria – She offers language boot camps around the USA and in Haiti. Here private tutoring is also exceptional.
Google Translate – This tool is better for individual words but can give awkward answers for actual phrases, especially for figures of speech. It’s a wonderful free reference and can be used offline on your phone.
What are some good books?
Creole Made Easy – This is a great starting textbook, even if you are using the free resources above. Offers an excellent basic grammar and vocabulary. The audio CDs cost extra, but will help you really hear the pronunciations.
Pimsleur Haitian Creole – A good basic spoken only course, even if many people find the repetition boring.
Haitian Creole Phrasebook – Excellent reference to work through common speaking situations.
